On this episode of The Courage Hotline — The Courage To Make It Personal — I help a concerned team member recognize opportunities to courageously lead from where they are after expressing concern that their leaders aren’t leading.

I responds to a caller wondering if courageous workplace change can truly happen after a keynote, one I delivered to this caller’s organization. I offer a candid reminder that transformation doesn’t start at the top. It starts within. While keynotes can spark perspective shifts, real change happens when individuals take personal courageous action: speaking up, stepping up, and showing up in ways that inspire others to do the same. As I put it, courage can’t live only in the C-suite; it must live everywhere — in the middle, on the front lines, and inside each of us.

On this episode of The Courage Hotline — The Courage to Create Accountability — I guide a leader on how to respectfully hold a team member accountable.

This episode kicks off with an insightful exploration into the challenge of holding a team member accountable for frequent meeting cancellations. I introduce the Situation, Behavior, and Impact (SBI) model, a structured method designed to deliver critical feedback without triggering defensiveness or escalating tensions.
On this episode of The Courage Hotline — The Courage To Take Up Space — I’m lending a hand to a professional who’s having a hard time demonstrating personal agency, particularly when engaging with authority figures.

Key Moments

[2:29] Personal agency is your own power and responsibility over your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

[4:33] Power has the ability to separate and something about that separation can often feel threatening.

[5:14] Our judgment gets pretty cloudy when we can’t activate our ability to manage our emotions.

[5:30] Rational thinking is needed for risk-taking.

[5:37] When we are overcome or overwhelmed by our emotions, we can be in an emotional state that inhibits us from questioning our assumptions.

[9:26] Courage is conjured – every time we need it, we have to conjure it.

[10:46] The goal is not to be courageous all the time. The goal is to be courageous for the right reason.

[12:58] We can lower down the stakes by asking questions of yourself and the person you’re talking to because questions break down assumptions.

[15:57] A question is not a declaration. It’s an invitation to dialogue.

[19:45] When you detach from the outcome itself, you actually allow more space for you to be open and move and to face uncertainty and challenge in a much more calm way.

On this episode of The Courage Hotline — The Courage To Confront Yourself — one caller got promoted into a prestigious position… that she doesn’t enjoy. Could it be that she needs to confront herself and her beliefs before deciding to move on? Another caller needs insight on how to move forward with an interesting business opportunity.

Key Moments

[3:43] When people need to ask for help, they equate the action with looking or feeling weak or incompetent or needy.

[6:36] It is important for you to be honest with yourself in identifying if the “not good fit” or “doesn’t bring me joy” part of your question is coming from a place of self-doubt, and if you felt more competent in the role, maybe you wouldn’t be feeling this way.

[12:29] The first thing we have to do with risk is that we have to clarify them; we clarify them so we can calculate them; and we calculate them so we can control them.

[13:37] When we are controlling the risk, we are “de-risking” the situation.

[14:30] Risks are required for growth. If you and other professionals and entrepreneurs want to grow into the fullness of your potential and power, you have to take risks.

[14:56] Your ability to take a risk depends on how free you are to make a choice.

[15:47] Lack comes into play when we’re unable to move forward to take worthwhile risks because we lack something.

[20:36] As you are considering taking the risk, the experiences from your past and your present that you put into the sample absolutely matter, and this will influence and frame your thinking and maybe your behavior moving forward.

[21:31] When you are taking courageous action, it is impossible to access the possibility that comes with courage without also exposing yourself to potential problems.

[22:04] It doesn’t always have to be “go big or go home” – it can absolutely be “start small and go slow.”
